    What to actually watch for

    • Public multiplayer servers have open chat with strangers, a completely different environment from single player.
    • Marketplace purchases (skins, worlds, texture packs) add up.
    • Some community servers host content well beyond PEGI 7.

    The settings worth switching on

    1. Manage it through Microsoft family settings: multiplayer access, chat and purchases can each be restricted.

    2. For younger children, keep play to single player or a private Realm with known friends.

    3. Turn chat to "friends only" or off inside multiplayer settings.

    4. Set spending approvals for the Marketplace.

    Our honest take

One of the safest mainstream games in single player and on a private Realm with school friends. The risk profile changes entirely on big public servers, so the age question is really a "which mode" question. A calm first game for 7-plus, with multiplayer opened up gradually.

    Frequently asked questions

It is rated PEGI 7, and single-player or private-Realm play genuinely suits that age. Public multiplayer servers with open chat are better treated as 10-plus with the chat settings reviewed.

Private Realms with known friends, yes. Large public servers, less so: open chat with strangers and user-made content mean the PEGI 7 rating no longer describes the experience. Microsoft family settings can block multiplayer entirely for younger players.

Bedrock Edition (the standard version on consoles, phones and Windows) integrates with Microsoft family settings and crossplay, making it the easier one to supervise. Java Edition is PC-only and popular with older players who want mods.
