Set Up Mesh Router with Content Filtering
Configure your mesh Wi-Fi system to automatically block inappropriate content across all connected devices.
Steps:
- 1Connect your mesh router and complete initial setup using the manufacturer's app
- 2Open the router's admin panel or mobile app
- 3Navigate to "Parental Controls" or "Content Filtering" settings
- 4Create family profiles and assign devices to each child
- 5Enable content categories to block (Adult, Violence, Gambling, etc.)
- 6Set time restrictions and bedtime schedules for each profile
- 7Test the filtering by trying to access blocked content
Tip:
Most mesh systems (Eero, Orbi, Google Nest) offer similar features but may have different menu names.
Enable Safe DNS Filtering
Use family-friendly DNS servers to block inappropriate websites at the network level for all devices.
Steps:
- 1Access your router's admin panel (usually by typing 192.168.1.1 in browser)
- 2Log in with your admin credentials
- 3Find "Network Settings", "DNS", or "Internet" settings
- 4Change DNS servers to family-safe options:
- 5Primary: 208.67.222.123, Secondary: 208.67.220.123 (OpenDNS FamilyShield)
- 6Save settings and restart your router
- 7Test by trying to access blocked content from any device
Tip:
Alternative family DNS: CleanBrowsing Family (185.228.168.168) or Cloudflare for Families (1.1.1.3).
Create Guest Network for IoT Devices
Separate your smart home devices and guest access from your main network for better security.
Steps:
- 1Log into your router's admin interface
- 2Look for "Guest Network", "Wireless Settings", or "Wi-Fi" options
- 3Enable Guest Network and give it a name (SSID)
- 4Set a strong password for the guest network
- 5Enable "Client Isolation" to prevent guests from accessing your main devices
- 6Set bandwidth limits if desired (optional)
- 7Connect smart TVs, voice assistants, and IoT devices to this network
Tip:
This prevents smart devices from potentially accessing your computers and personal files on the main network.
Update Router Firmware for Security
Keep your router secure with the latest firmware updates that patch security vulnerabilities.
Steps:
- 1Check your current firmware version in router admin panel
- 2Visit manufacturer's website to check for latest firmware
