Set Up Switch Parental Controls
Most controls live in the free companion app rather than on the console.
Steps:
- 1Download the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on your phone.
- 2Follow the app’s instructions to link it to the console using the code it shows.
- 3Set a daily play time limit, and a bedtime alarm if you want play to stop by a set hour.
- 4Choose whether the console just shows an alarm when time is up, or suspends the game.
- 5Pick a restriction level for content based on your child’s age, or customise it.
- 6Set a PIN so the settings cannot be changed on the console without you.
- 7For eShop purchases, sign in to your Nintendo Account online and set spending restrictions in your family group.
Tip:
Start with the alarm-only option for time limits and move to auto-suspend only if the alarm gets ignored. It keeps the app from feeling like a punishment.
What it covers, and what it does not
The app covers play time, content ratings and some social features, and shows you what has been played each day. Purchase controls are separate: they are set through the Nintendo Account family group online, not the app, so do both halves.
Worth knowing
The app gives you a daily and monthly summary of what was played and for how long, which is a genuinely useful conversation starter rather than just a restriction tool.
