Roblox parental controls, set up properly

Roblox rebuilt its parental controls across 2025 and 2026. You now manage them from your own linked parent account rather than a four-digit PIN, and since January 2026 chat requires an age check that sorts players into age bands. If you last looked at Roblox settings a couple of years ago, it has genuinely changed. Here is the current setup.

    Set Up Roblox Parental Controls

Controls are managed from a parent account linked to your child’s account.

    Steps:

    1. 1Create your own free Roblox account if you do not have one.
    2. 2In your child’s Roblox settings, open Parental Controls and start Family Pairing to link your account to theirs.
    3. 3Set a parental PIN from the security settings so nothing changes without you.
    4. 4Choose a content maturity level, which controls which experiences your child can join.
    5. 5Set the chat controls. For under-13s you manage these directly; note that since January 2026 chat features require an age check.
    6. 6Set a monthly spending limit for Robux, or keep spending off entirely.
    7. 7Set screen time limits if you want Roblox to cap daily play.

    Tip:

For a child under 13 you control chat, content, spending and time directly from your own device. From 13, Roblox hands some settings to the teenager, but you keep oversight of friends, screen time and spending.

    The 2026 age tiers, briefly

Roblox introduced age-based account tiers for under-16s in 2026. Roblox Kids, for ages 5 to 8, limits accounts to curated content with communication off by default. Roblox Select, for ages 9 to 15, allows broader content with age-appropriate communication. Alongside the January 2026 age checks for chat, the aim is to keep children and adults largely separated.

    Worth knowing

Roblox is not one game but millions of user-made experiences, which is why the content maturity setting matters more than any single age rating. Review it as your child gets older rather than setting it once and forgetting it.

    Frequently asked questions

Controls moved from an on-device PIN to a linked parent account you manage from your own device. Since January 2026, chat also requires an age check, and under-16 accounts now sit in age-based tiers with stricter defaults for younger children.

The January 2026 age checks sort players into age bands that largely keep children and adults apart in chat, and on the youngest account tier communication is off by default. No system is perfect, so keep chat settings reviewed and talk about what to do if a stranger makes contact.

From your linked parent account you can set a monthly spending limit or keep purchases off entirely. Spending controls sit alongside chat and content settings in the parental controls.

You keep oversight. From 13, Roblox lets teenagers manage some of their own settings, but a paired parent account still has visibility of friends, screen time and spending, and for younger teens you can still manage chat and block specific experiences.
